CULTURAL PRESERVATION AND EMERGENCY RELIEF WORK

Education, health and culture are all integrated part of the life of Sherpa people living in Solukhumbu district. Therefore, support to cultural preservation work is equally important. Himalayan Trust has supported to rebuild and renovate dozens of local important monasteries, Chortens (pagodas) and prayer wheels.

Besides, whenever the monsoon rain floods local bridges and trails disturbing the local movement of the people, the community request the support of the Trust for their rebuilding and the Trust has done dozens of such relief supports.

In several villages, in the Everest region, the Trust has helped with several water supply projects at the request of the local community.

The Lukla airport (gateway to Everest) was built by the Himalayan Trust in 1964 to facilitate the transport of building materials, equipment, schools and hospital supplies as those days, there were no other means of transport except to walk for three weeks all the way from Banepa town. Today, this airport after improvement by the government of Nepal became one of the busiest domestic airports in Nepal flying huge numbers of tourists bringing economic prosperity for the local people.
